Prepared for Mortier’s ‘Suite du Neptune Francois’, an elephant-folio atlas of the coasts of the world outside Europe, a supplement to his ‘Neptune Francois’ which covered Europe. While the ‘Neptune Francois’ was a more functional sea atlas, the ‘Suite’ was really more a library volume, hence the greater care lavished on its production.
This chart covers the coasts of the Indian Ocean north of the Equator, from the coast of Africa round to the Straits of Singapore and western Sumatra; belying its intent as a sea atlas, this map contains considerable detail for the interior of the countries shown, with most of the Arabian peninsula mapped, as also southern Persia, India and part of South-East Asia.
