Abraham Ortelius is credited as the creator of the first “modern world atlas” in the sense of a collection of maps performed on a uniform format, entirely independent from the influence of Ptolemy. The atlas was hugely successful, and was much reprinted, corrected, improved and enlarged between 1570, its first edition, to 1612, the last formal edition.

This map appeared in all editions of the Atlas; this is an early printing of the map, from the 1573 Latin text edition, with a single-page Latin text printed on the verso.
