The purpose of the author’s travels was to survey the strength of the U.S. Navy in order to ascertain what position it was in to challenge Britain’s domination of the seas. His travels take him through New York, Philadelphia, Washington, Baltimore, Albany, Boston, Halifax, Quebec (depicted in the folding frontispiece), and the Niagara Falls. There are also various passages concerning Native American life and customs, and relationship with the settled European population.
