First edition. Mezzotint portrait frontispiece of Sir Sydney Smith, 19 hand-coloured plates (mostly aquatints), and a further vignette portrait in the text. Folio. Contemporary full calf, the spine with raised bands ruled in gilt, and contrasting lettering pieces; front joint splitting but holding firmly, headcap missing, light wear to boards and corners, otherwise very good. iv, 42pp. London, W. Francis Spilsbury was surgeon on board HMS Tigre during the campaigns against Napoleon’s French troops in the Levant, 1799-1800. The splendid views are mostly connected with the coastal towns of the Levantine coast, but include some inland scenes.
