Based on the old English Morality play, new version by Hugo von Hofmannsthal, set to blank verse by the author, in collaboration with Richard Ordysnki. More accurately this is a re-working of the original play and Hofmannsthals ‘Jedermann’, the author adding characters and scenes of his own. Sterling, a California poet and the uncrowned King of San Francisco’s Bohemia, was inspired and tutored by the great Ambrose Bierce, and forged friendships with many of his fellow American writers, such as H.L. Mencken, with whom he corresponded. He apotheosized his home town, San Francisco, as ‘the cool, grey city of love’.

An excellent copy, one small dent to the top cover.
