Grierson served as Deputy Assistant Quarter Master General (for Intelligence) with the Indian Contingent in Egypt. He saw action at Kassassin and Tel-el-Kebir. He was subsequently DAA & QMG at Suakin, 1885, DAQMG on the Hazara Expedition, AAG at HQ in South Africa, DAG in China on Count von Waldersee’s Staff.

A cosummate professional and exemplary modern soldier; “Grierson’s great knowledge of languages, his strength, energy, capacity for work, and extraordinary memory, enabled him to acquire a vast knowledge of his profession. He admired the British private soldier, and was apparently beloved by his troops, for though strict as regards training, he spared them unnecessary duties by thinking out his problems in advance and making provision for all reasonable comfort and relaxation. Although early service was chiefly on the staff, he wrote in 1914 that he would rather command a battalion in war than be chief of the general staff. He was of a cheerful disposition, a good musician, an amateur actor, and fond of travel and society, but he really lived for his profession, and was devoted to the army.” [ODNB] He died in 1914 whilst on his way to take command of the 2nd Army Corps.

A highly detailed and important summary.
