VOLTAIRE (M. de).

The Princess of Babylon.

First edition, limited to 1500 copies. Illustrations by Thomas Lowinsky. 8vo., half parchment over marbled boards, fore and lower edges untrimmed. London, The Nonesuch Press, 1927.

£80.00

The translation taken from the 1796 Glasgow edition, the translator unidentified. A moral tale in the manner of his earlier masterpiece ‘Candide’, full of contemporary satire, a virtual primer of Enlightenment thinking, with a light touch. Illustrated with Lowinsky’s delightfully surreal line drawings.

A clean and fresh copy, the boards very slightly rubbed.
