An exhaustive account. Frederick William Beechey had already served on expeditions in the American South and the Arctic before joining Smyth on a two year surveying expedition of the North African coast from Tripoli to Derna. Beechey’s brother, Henry (who served as Salt’s secretary in 1816), accompanied him and provided the illustrations. Abbey Travel, 305.
