CHAMBRAY ([George, Marquis] de) &
BRERETON (Major William) [transl.]
Prussia in 1833.
“This little work is but a transcript of notes made during a residence at Berlin of twenty days, and during a journey of twenty-six days in going and returning. I must, however, make an exception as to what I have said upon the military institutions of Prussia; this has been the result of much reflexion and enquiry.” [From the Author’s Preface]
This copy inscribed as “Presented to the U[nited] S[ervices] C[lub] by the translator - Major Brereton, Royal Artillery”. Brereton, a veteran of the Peninsula and Waterloo, where he was severely wounded, must have felt this paper by his fellow artillery officer to be of sufficient topical interest to deserve translation. A couple of corrections in Brereton’s hand to the Appendix.
