In the Canstatt affair, Santiago Canstatt, a registered British citizen, was arrested by Paraguayan authorities, who accused him of being involved with a plot to assassinate the president, Carlos Antonio López. In retaliation, British warships attacked the Paraguayan warship Tacuarí in the port of Buenos Aires.

This work comprises a series of diplomatic correspondence of, among others, Carlos Calvo and Lord John Russell, on the topic with the goal being to resolve the issue and re-establish normal relations.
