Engraved beneath the title: “From the original portrait placed in the Royal Hospital Greenwich by several Naval Officers & Scientific men, in honour of his great discoveries, & Achievements in the Arctic and Antarctic Regions. North magnetic Pole discovered 1st June 1831- Highest North Latitude (82% 44’) Attained 23rd July 1827 - Highest South Latitude (78% 11’) attained 23rd February 1842.”
The artist pays visual tribute to Ross’s achievements by placing a map of the Antarctic entitled “South Polar Discovery 1841-2” on the wall behind the subject. While the globe is placed with the Northwest passage to the fore.
