Perkins p.413 “very desirable”. Indian reprint of the 1853-6 London edition. The second volume was printed the following year, both editions are uncommon, OCLC recording only one set of this and one of the London edition, COPAC has only the BL set of the London.

This copy with the presentation inscription, “To Lieut. Colonel H[enry] A[rthur] Merewether from Lieut. Colonel Sherard & The Officers “Jacob’s Horse”, February 1907.” Sherard, who had served in the Second Afghan War, commanded the Regiment from 1901-8, retiring in 1911, but was “employed under” the War Office from 1917-19.

Loosely inserted is Merewether’s first commission as Second Lieutenant 51st Foot, signed by Queen Victoria. He was subsequently with the South Yorkshire Regiment, then on attachment to the Bengal Staff Corps. Also present is his Record of Services to 1897, showing that he had been awarded the medal for the Second Afghan War and medal and two clasps for Burma, confirmed from the Army List. His last recorded Special Service was as Inspecting Officer, Famine Relief Work in Bareilly, for which he received the Lieutenant Governor’s thanks and was specially mentioned in a minute issued from Allahabad 15th Dec. 1897. The 1894 India List shows him as Captain and Squadron Commander, 7th Bengal Cavalry.

Rare Indian Regimental with an interesting provenance.
