DOLEAC
Réquisitoire présenté à l'Administration du District de Bagneres,
Interesting pamphlet from the time of the French Revolution concerning the fate of a certain Marcel Pinac.
Pinac had been a priest, a profession outlawed by the new French regime. Evidence was presented by Marcel’s nephew, Bertrand Pinac, in favour of Marcel; the evidence states (among other things) that Marcel lived as a recluse, and therefore his “civisme” was not in question, as he no longer preached for the Catholic Church. The administrators of the region agreed. However, the national agent Doleac found this ruling to be in error, stating that “C’est ici un individu définitivement condamné à la déportation, pour n’avoir pas prêté le serment de la liberté & de l’égalité; les fonctionaires publics ont dû le [Marcel] considérer dès le premier mot, comme un habitant de la Guianne …”
In August 1792, the revolutionary government designated Guiana as a deportation site for priests who refused abjure their faith and pledge allegiance to the new regime.
