KIRSTEIN (Lincoln).

Rhymes and more Rhymes of a PFC.

Small 4to., original yapp wrappers. New York, New Directions, 1966.

£90.00

Inscribed by the author on the cover (“for David Piper / and more”) and on the title page: “for David Piper, a comrade in arms from L.K. London June ’66.” Roughly half of the poems on the contents page have a small tick next to them in the same pen. Loosely inserted is a t.l.s. from the author to David Piper, asking him to lunch. He praised this book as “the most convincing, moving and impressive” book he had read about World War II. Kirstein was unusually gifted in a range of artistic fields, but his main passion was always the ballet. In 1946 he and the choreographer George Balanchine founded the Ballet Society, renamed The New York City Ballet in 1948. Wrappers a little worn at the edges, otherwise an excellent copy.
