Johnston’s account of his first trip into the African interior, when he travelled under the seventh Earl of Mayo on an expedition through Southern Angola. From there he travelled alone into the Congo basin, meeting (and befriending) Stanley, who was engaged with the establishment of the Congo Free State at the time.
