Heath (William) engraver.
A Scene in the Island of Elba, or Boney and his old Friend Studying Mathematics.

Very Rare. Not in the BM. We have located another impression at Bodley and one at Harvard and at Parma, Italy (Museo Glauco Lombardi).

A very striking caricature showing Napoleon seated on a commode beneath a gallows on the island of Elba with the devil at his shoulder.

Napoleon’s early aptitude in mathematics had drawn him to the military and he remained interested in the subject all his life. He is shown here—rather prophetically—with a globe at his feet, quadrant in hand, plotting his escape from exile on the island of Elba.
