WITH THE MAP

First English edition thus. Large folding lithograph chart (measuring 680 by 480mm) by MELVILL VAN CARNBEE entitled: ‘Profil over het Eiland Java van een aantal Bergen, welke voor de Zeefart van Belang zijn’ (J. Swart, 1843). 8vo. Modern half calf, repairs to title, but overall a very good copy. [xii], 252pp. London, Admiralty/Hydrographic Office, 1850.

£950.00

A desirable copy of this scarce pilot, which includes a large folding map of Java printed on heavy stock and dated 1843.

Both authors were lieutenants in the Dutch Navy. The second part by Smits is here in its second English version, the author having published both Dutch and English editions in Batavia in 1848. The preface states the following: “The accompanying charts of Java and of the neighbouring islands, were constructed by Mr. Jacob Swart, the eminent and erudite hydrographer of Amsterdam either from actual surveys or from the most trustworthy sources that could be obtained.” The present loose chart fits that description although it is printed on heavy stock and dated 1843. Only one copy of the text in OCLC (no map called for).
