£350.00

A selection from Ferdowsi’s epic poem, printed in a neat Farsi type at the Urdu Guide Press. It includes the part of the poem concerning the first three centuries of Sassanian rule.

It was edited by the British soldier and linguist Henry Sullivan Jarrett (1839-1919), and issued as a text for the Degree of Honor Examination in Persian for [British Indian] Officers in the military and civil services. With the utilitarian appearance of a textbook, it stands in stark contrast to the popular illustrated editions (in Farsi and Urdu) of the Shahnameh circulating in India at the time.
