A sermon by António Vieira (1608-1697), the famous seventeenth century Portuguese Jesuit Preacher, given to the Misericordia charitable society in the presence of the Viceroy of Brazil on the Feast of the Visitation. The sermon was preached in Bahia, where Vieira, having arrived at the age of six, received his education, entered the priesthood and began to establish a reputation as a remarkable orator. After a successful albeit rocky career that encompassed fields from missionary work to diplomacy, he returned to Bahia, where he settled for last sixteen years of his life. “Although he spent many years in Portugal and on diplomatic missions in France, England, Holland, and Rome, he never lost his Brazilian accent.” (Borba De Moraes, Rubens. Bibliographia Brasiliana, 1983. V.2. p.921.).
The 1646 first edition of the sermon was also published by Domingos Lopes Rosa. The third appeared in 1658, printed by Thome Carvalho at the University of Coimbra.
