Simon van der Stel was appointed Dutch governor of the Cape of Good Hope settlement in 1679. In 1685 he led an expedition overland to the north of Table Bay. He reached Namaqualand and made a peaceful pact with the natives. In turn the copper mountain was discovered and a smelting furnace was established almost immediately. His account includes descriptions of the people and natural history of the region.Howgego, S170.
