Published and authored (using a pseudonym) by William Hone, the radical author and bookseller who fought a long battle against censorship, a collection of anecdotes published at the time of the turn away from the overt moral tone of previous such writings, towards a more accurate journalistic style of reportage, particularly in the stories on the misuse of circumstantial evidence, which laid the way for the early writers of detective fiction such as Wilkie Collins.
