A beautiful album. This copy includes a 160 x 185mm pencil sketch (a series of African women) by Daniell on the front pastedown.

Daniell accompanied Dr. Somerville and John Barrow on an expedition into the interior of South Africa. Their expedition reached Lataku, the furthest point reached by Europeans at that time. All of the images in this work were drawn on the expedition. Daniell always insisted on drawing live subjects to better understand, and thus depict, them. He gained tremendous respect from his companions and the accompanying text to the images was written by Somerville and Barrow. Abbey 326; Mendelssohn, p413.
