FIRST EDITION. PUBLISHER’S PRESENTATION COPY, rubber-stamped on front cover: ‚“Presentation Copy. / With Messrs. Elkin and Co’s compliments.“ Sorrow was Scott’s Opus36, No. 2, No. 1 being Valediction. Though no markings document its provenance, this copy comes from the collection of Maud Beerbohm Tree (1863-1937), as augmented by her daughters Viola (1884-1938) and Felicity (1894-1978). Though Herbert died in 1917, Maud continued her career, even appearing in some films. She made her last appearance on stage in 1935. Eight pp., consisting of two leaves each folded once, one nested unsewn in the other. Some dusting and faint evidence of a single vertical fold, but in excellent condition for sheet music.
