Wilfrid Noyce (1917-1962) was born in Simla, India and educated at boarding school in England. As a member of the King’s Royal Rifle Corps he served in India between 1942-6. A fine climber throughout his life, Noyce joined the 1953 Everest expedition, and alongside Sherpa Annullu, opened the route to the South Col. Establishing a passage to this 26,000 ft pass opened the route to the peak, making it possible for the summit team of Edmund Hillary and Tenzing Norgay to navigate their ascent. Noyce met them at the Col on their way down with fresh supplies. A poet as well as a mountaineer, Noyce published several books of poetry and there are a series of poems composed on Everest present at the end of this volume.
