First edition. Folding map & 25 lithograph plates all lithographed by the author’s wife from her own drawings, captioned either in English or in French. Tall 8vo. Original blind-stamped cloth, [vi], 172pp. London, 1852.
The Mellys were successful traders of Swiss origin, based in Liverpool. This collection of letters, mostly to friends and family, which were not written for publication and make an interesting companion to the author’s son’s account of the trip published under the title Khartoum and the Blue and White Nile in 1851. This copy has only 25 plates, whereas we have had one other copy that had 26. This example though has a panorama that was not found with our other copy, thus given the private nature of the publication the issue of plates would seem to vary.
