J.M. Bowker was the eldest son of Miles Bowker, one of the first settlers in the Cape in 1820. The work includes a biographical sketch, a synopsis of Frontier History and much correspondence between Bowker and Sir B. D’Urban. Bowker served with distinction in the Frontier War of 1834-5. His papers provide an important history of the Eastern Province between 1837-47. Mendelssohn I, p168.
