RANSOME (Arthur).
Swallows and Amazons.
First edition of the beloved children's classic
An unusually nice copy of the first edition, not commonly found in the dust jacket.
A beloved children’s classic, Ransome sets the first instalment of his children’s adventure tales in the Lake District. The story and setting is loosely based around a summer holiday he had spent teaching some friend’s children how to sail. Celebrated as a story centring around children’s imagination and play; as one critic at the time wrote: “the book is the very stuff of play. It is make-believe such as all children have indulged in: even children who have not been so fortunate as to have a lake and a boat and an island but only a backyard amongst the semis of Suburbia.” (Malcolm Muggeridge, The Manchester Guardian, July 1930).
Overall in very good condition. Dust jacket price clipped; spine panel age toned; some wear, creasing and age toning to extremities of jacket, with some damp-staining to jacket rear panel, only visible on the reverse. The cloth is somewhat faded to the front and rear board, with damp-staining to the rear board corresponding with the same on the rear panel of the jacket. Ever so slight offsetting to the cartographic endpapers, occasional light spotting internally otherwise a clean text-block.
