MAUGHAM (W. Somerset).

The Tenth Man, a tragic Comedy in Three Acts.

First edition, American issue. 8vo. Original grey boards with spine label. London, William Heinemann, 1913.

£50.00

This is the American issue of the first edition: the sheets were printed in London by William Heinemann and then shipped to America, where they were sold by George H. Doran. Toole Stott says that in cases where Heinemann sent fewer than 200 sets of sheets to America, the Heinemann title page was retained, with the addition of a rubber stamped ‘Made in Great Britain’ on the title page verso. Another way of identifying the American issue of such a first edition is the binding: they were bound in grey paper boards. This is a very good copy (spine darkened, spine ends with minor shelfwear - two flaws almost always present on these delicate Heinemann-for-Doran bindings).
