First edition. 109 black and white photographic images, various sizes, showing the damaged caused by the earthquake. Bound after are 43 photographic illustrations of Chile and Argentina, most showing the Andes. All with typed captions. Oblong folio. Together in red cloth with gilt title: “A.L. Rowley. In Memory of the Earthquake. Valparaiso August 1906”, with original wrapper to the first part bound in. Cloth discoloured, wrapper worn. Some occasional light foxing. Some pages with central crease, a few photographs with manuscript notes. Santiago, E. Leblanc, 1906.

Inscription to the front wrapper: “For Mother from Arthur, left Valparaiso 5th Oct. 1906, arrived London Nov. 20th.”

Including images of: Vista jeneral de Valparaiso; Gran Avenida, edificio de 4 pisos (Valparaiso); Hospital San Agustin (Valparaiso); Viña del Mar; Cuartel de Lanceros (Limache); an image of looters shot by the authorities; Resguardo y posada en Salto del Soldado; Cerro del Tolorsa; Calle San Martin, Mendoza (Argentina); and Estacion en Uspallata (possibly by C. Kirsinger).

The 1906 Valparaíso earthquake destroyed most of the city and caused severe damage in many other locations throughout Chile, causing the deaths of nearly 4,000 people.

This album showing the devastation is scarce. The digitised copy on Gallica states that the album contains 116 photographs; however, the present copy matches the digitised one.
