One of 60 sets of 13 loose engravings, (this no. lviii). Printed on japon by Will Carter at the Rampant Lions Press for Clover Hill Editions. London, published by Douglas Cleverdon, 1979.
Fine.
The Book of Jonah was the first of the three important books illustrated by Jones for the Golden Cockerel Press, first printed in 1926. Cave and Manson praised the “engravings of tremendous power, in which the harmony between the designs and the type was managed with great skill … a totally successful conclusion.” The printing of the blocks in the 1926 edition left something to be desired, and the present edition, printed by Will Carter from the original blocks, is distinctly superior.
