In addition to the wealth of information on the slave trade and the local peoples, the narrative provides interesting descriptions of Zanzibar, including a reception and subsequently a dinner with the Imaum of Muscat. Barnard also claimed to have “had the honour of hoisting the English flag for the first time” (p77) in Zanzibar during the same visit.
