Fermor undertook this trip at the age of eighteen after his disastrous school career (he was expelled) and a period of precocious dissipation. He intended to live “like a tramp, a pilgrim or a wandering scholar”, sleeping in work-houses, monasteries and barns, but he contrived to intersperse the hardships with leisurely sojourns in castles.
A very good copy, contents clean, jacket slightly edge worn with minor chipping at head of spine, a few small areas of faint browning staining to rear panel.
