A booklet entitled ‘Tokyo-jin’ had already been part of the extraordinary ‘Toshi e’ published in 1974, however the present is an entirely different publication with images taken between 1978 and 1983. Takanashi is clearly fond of the city with its unique absurdities and contrasts. What is particularly interesting is the way in which the two sections of the book interleave with each other, providing a shifting narrative: The left and the right side of the book fold into each other in a way that three images can be viewed each time we turn a page. The book-designer Kikuchi Nobuyoshi first used this concept to great effect in Tsukiji’s ‘Suichokujo no ryoki’ (1975).
