GOETHE (Johann Wolfgang von) & DOVES PRESS
Torquato Tasso. Ein Schauspiel von Goethe.

Bookplate of Haven O’More [Richard Haven Moore] to upper pastedown. Good, spine split at head of upper and lower joints, spine slightly sunned, raised bands and extremities of boards rubbed, internally fine.

The finest expression of the edition of Torquato Tasso printed by the Doves Press, combining both meticulous printing on vellum with elegant gold initials drawn by the great calligrapher Graily Hewitt. This was the last Doves Press book to be issued in vellum copies with gold initials, the labour of both proving unsustainable for Cobden-Sanderson. The usually austere printing which characterises the press is here lightened with a gilded touch of hand work, which rather than detracting from the type draws attention to it’s great character and the human stories which underly its creation.
