A collection of essays by the British economist and civil servant Sir Ralph George Hawtrey (1879-1975) principally concerned with the machinery of credit in relation to trade and the relation of credit to productive activity and more particularly to the trade cycle. Together the essays form a continuation of the theme developed in Hawtrey’s earlier work Monetary Reconstruction that the trade cycle is a ‘purely monetary phenomenon’.
