A comprehensive report on British trade in Persia (present-day Iran), with detailed notes on Persian trade more generally, such as its main commercial centres and routes. Maclean was aided in his work by the various British institutions and residents he met with on his visit, from consular officers to agents of the Imperial Bank of Persia.

His time in Persia was part of an enterprising tour of the Gulf, which included stops at Bushire, Kuwait, Bahrain and Muscat. A separate report on the trade of Oman was also published in 1904.
