BROWNE (W.G.).
Travels in Africa, Egypt, and Syria, from the Year 1792 to 1798.

An important, and much underrated and under-appreciated work. Apart from providing one of first substantial descriptions of the Sultanate of Darfur, Browne also described for the first time in a western text the practice of female genital mutilation (pp. 394-400) in the “Medical Remarks” section.

Written on a preliminary leaf are extracts from contemporary reviews, in the hand of a previous owner.

Blackmer 219 [citing the 1799 first edition]; Ibrahim-Hilmy I, p. 91.
