The translator comments that half of the places mentioned by Pallme were not to be found on any of the “most recent maps”. The author was a Bohemian who made this journey on behalf of a commercial establishment in Cairo, in the hopes of establishing trading routes into the interior.

The first edition was printed in Stuttgart in 1843 (volume 44 of the Reisen und Landerbeschreibungen). This English edition is uncommon.
