HILL (Samuel S.).
Travels in the Sandwich and Society Islands.
Arriving in Honolulu on Christmas Eve, 1848, Hill gives a good description of Honolulu, Lahaina, Kawaiha and provides a general history of Hawaii since the death of Cook (of course, he visits Kealakekua Bay). 300 pages of this work are devoted to Hawaii, the remainder covers his time in Tahiti, the Society Islands and Valparaiso. The appendix includes a transcription of the Hawaiian Declaration of Rights and, of greater interest, “Mutiny and Massacre at Sea” a five page account by Robert McNally on the Schooner Amelia relating the murder of the first mate by three men. Forbes, 2175; O’Reilly and Reitman, 1143.
