The Colonial Office’s plan to map the Niger spelt disaster for all who were commissioned with the task: Major John Peddie died of fever. His replacement, Captain Thomas Campbell, also died and was replaced by Gray and Dochard. They fared little better than their predecessors, though both managed to survive. The plates are all after sketches by Gray and are some of the most interesting to appear from this period. Abbey, 282.
