Andries Botha was a Field-Cornet (South African equivalent to a Lieutenant), who lived in the Griqua settlement near the Kat River. He led the settlers in a battle against the Xhosa in 1851 and was charged with treason as a result. The text of this work is drawn from the Cape Town Mail, yet is important for the folding frontispiece map of the Kat River Settlement, which was the most accurate at the time of publication.
