Kojima Ichiro was born in 1924 in Aomori-shi. He was drafted into the army in 1944 and sent to China where he spent a year. Returning to Japan in 1946 he took up photography. He specialised in the countryside around his home-town of Kiso on Tsugaru peninsula (Aomori Pref.), the west side of the very northern tip of Honshu. During the late 50s he held several exhibitions and his work was published in a number of photographic magazines. The present is his first and only publication. He died unexpectedly in 1964 of a heart attack. Although documentary in nature the books has a deep sense of melancholy. Poverty, snow, and a wind-swept sky loom large. With poems by Takagi Kyozo.
