[3rd MADRAS LANCERS].
Two portraits of sowars in different dress uniforms of 3rd Madras Lancers.

Full length portraits of two Indian cavalryman in the different dress uniforms of the 3rd Madras Lancers. One wears the full dress of a major, complete with pith helmet with spiked finial. The other wears a long frock coat with a distinctively striped turban and khulla.

“Originally raised in 1784 as the 2nd Regiment of Madras Native Cavalry, the unit was re-raised in 1786 following a mutiny over pay. In 1788 the regiment was renumbered the 3rd Regiment of Madras Native Cavalry. By 1819 the unit had dropped the title ‘native’ and was known as 3rd Regiment of Madras Light Cavalry, converting to lancers by 1891.” (National Army Museum).

The fact that one of these watercolours is captioned “3rd M.L.” would suggest a date between the conversion from Madras Light Cavalry to Madras Lancers (1891), but before the 1903 retitling to 28th Light Cavalry.
