LABORDE Alexandre Louis Joseph, comte de
Voeu de la justice et de l'humanité en faveur de l'expédition de D. Pedro.
DOM PEDRO OF BRAZIL
Pedro IV of Portugal (1798-1834) was the first Emperor of Brazil, and a humane and liberal monarch. In this pamphlet Laborde right at the very beginning contrasts priestly and aristocratic power with natural rights and the dignity of man, the second of which ‘wishes to associate all peoples in the forward progress of civilisation, and the benefits of liberty’.
Alexandre de Laborde (1773-1842) soldier and scholar is chiefly known for his Voyage pittoresque et historique en Espagne, but he was extremely interested in popular education for the masses, and active in liberal politics, as may be seen from this short work.
The only copy in the UK is in Oxford. OCLC records a handful of copies, including one at Harvard. It is not at Yale.
