A beautifully illustrated work. Cockburn intended these two volumes to serve as a “Guide de Voyageur, to point out the objects most worthy of attention of future visitors” rather than a history of the islands. It is, in fact, a highly informative journal of his tour through the Mediterranean. Cockburn served with distinction in the Peninsular War and was later entrusted to transport Napoleon to St Helena.
