WHELER (George) &
SPON (Jacob).
This is one of the most important accounts of travels in the Levant, and the first description of Athens which was systematic, detailed, and trustworthy.
Having met in Italy in 1675 Spon and Wheler travelled to Zakynthos and thence by sea to Constantinople. Spon’s work is particularly valued since he took note not only of the classical antiquities, but also paid considerable attention to the topography and manners of modern Greece.
