VOLNEY (C.F.).
Voyage en Syrie et en Égypte, pendant les Années 1783, 1784 et 1785.
Blackmer 1748 (various editions): “Volney set out for Egypt at the end of 1782. He spent three years travelling mostly on foot in Syria and Egypt, studying the history, political institutions, customs and manners of the people. Volney spent seven months in Cairo and later travelled with Cassas in Syria in 1785. His work, which is not an account of his travels, but the sum of his observations, enjoyed a tremendous success on its appearance. It constitutes the best exposé of Ottoman Egypt at the end of the 18th century.”
