Following the return of Rae with the first news of the possible fate of Sir John Franklin, Lady Franklin set about putting together a search expedition, purchasing and fitting out the Fox largely at her own expense. McClintock and the other officers who took part offered their services gratis, and their return to England in 1859 with the evidence of Franklin’s death and the fate of the ships and their crew, guaranteed his knighthood in the following year.
