An “outstanding account” (Rosove).
Bruce, the expedition’s leader, refused to write a popular account of the Scotia voyage believing, erroneously, that there was little of interest beyond the scientific discoveries made.
Rudmose-Brown, Mossman and Pirie took it upon themselves to complete the task and produced this fine work. Far more than simply a string of journal entries, the work provides a genuinely insightful account of what life was like in the Antarctic, as well as documenting the most important scientific findings. Robert N. Rudmose-Brown (1879-1957) was the naturalist on the expedition, and went on to have a distinguished career as an oceanographer, botanist, and ultimately an academic geographer.
