The Washer of the Ford: And other Legendary Moralities.

First edition. 8vo., original blue cloth lettered and decorated in gilt, t.e.g., others untrimmed, celtic knotwork endpapers, 20pp catalogue. Edinburgh, Patrick Geddes, 1896.

£550.00

A presentation copy, inscribed by the author opposite the half title page ‘To Aunt Agnes with dear love for her Birthday - from Will 1896’. A title from the series ‘The Celtic Library’, called by William Rossetti ‘the author’s finest and deepest work’, published in remarkably similar style to some of Yeats’ works and other Pan-Celtic books from the same period, with the same dark blue cloth and striking gilt decoration. James Joyce who was quite rude about the Celtic revival writers (‘cultic toilette’) nevertheless turned the figure of the Washer of the Ford into Anna Livia Plurabelle.

Head and tail of spine very slightly worn, back cover very slightly scratched.
